this is a quick one.

wow. ever have one of those days where you thought you might as well just pack it up. write your mom good bye. climb to the roof of a four floor building (cuz who we kiddin? we're all way less in shape than our singles-sites profiles lead randoms to believe) and take a flying fucking leap?

I'm a big fan of doom metal. Earthride, signed to Southern Lord Records, delivers it in epic doses. And, not so coincidentally, Southern Lord also carries Black Cobra, another of my favorites. So, yeah, Earthride formed in 1997 and released their self titled 4 song ep in 2000. Some of the members came from other bands but regardless of all that, the first album, which is fabulous, came in 2002 and was titled Taming of the Demons. The album is get down and dirty southern fried metal with the gruff vocals of Dave Sherman, Joe Ruthvin reverberating your soul on bass (who has since been replaced by Rob Hampshire), Kyle Van Steinburg's mammoth, grungy, sometimes Hendrix-esque guitar skills, and Eric Little beating the fuck out of the drums behind it all. It's good stuff from that wonderful little state of Maryland which has produced a lot of doom greats.

This album has 8 tracks with a little something for everyone. At times, the combination of deep vocals and heavy, distorted guitar gets you slowly trudging through the muck like on the second track For Mere Remains. But in the next moment, you might be surprisingly lifted and moved by the faster paced , more nimble riffs on tracks like train wreck. Let me tell you, though, (and i think this is what throws a lot of people off), don't download this expecting complicated lyrics and variations in the vocals. That's not the style. This right here is comparable to Motorhead style vocals. It all works together quite well. Just shake off your expectations for what the vocals should be and enjoy what's here. All in all, no matter what sort of interesting words you want to put on it, what you have here is some heavy ass fucking doom metal.

I'm a Georgia girl born and raised whether I like it or not. I think I've accepted the fact or rather more lovingly embraced it in the last couple of years. And, as luck would have it, there are a few good reasons not to mumble through the state name as quickly as possible when someone asks where I'm from....at least if you have a taste for metal. And I do. Oh, boy do I ever.

Savannah, with its touristy attractions and quaint atmosphere, has been home to several bands I enjoy of late. Spin magazine even detailed as much in a recent article which you can read here. Baroness, which is, by far, my favorite band of the now hails from Savannah along with Kylesa and Black Tusk which also rank pretty high on my list. In fact, not too long ago, I made the 5 hour trek to the city just to see Kylesa and Baroness in concert. It was epic...well worth the time and money spent to get there. I remember standing near the stage, sweaty, completely charged with energy, and feeling so fucking free. So...me.

when i was 9 an album dropped that would change my life. Some of you might not even have been alive then...or at least you were still chewing on pureed bananas or cheerios or whatever you eat when you cut a tooth (that's you Josh). that album was License to Ill. the providers were the Beastie Boys.

here's the law. everyone who loves music must at least be familiar. you know who they are. you've heard songs from this album, at minimum. if however you have never owned this album...on tape, vinyl, cd or all digital...well i don't fucking know what to say to you.

obviously, occasional obsession issues. so. these are the original demos from the album. lovingly referred to as Original Ill.

the tracks I'm Down, Scenario, Fight For Your Right #2 are on this album but it's missing Slow Ride which i just enjoy too much not to share.

the chances of finding die hard beastie fans here are remote, but i wager everyone remembers a time when a track off this album was playin in the background and they got stoked.

oh yeah... atp stands for alabama thunderpussy. you might have known that but i doubt it.

This band started out in Virginia in the mid to late 1990s. The band members changed a lot over the years and I don't really feel like trying to detail that all out. After calling it quits in 2008,  the band consisted of Kyle Thomas, Erik Larsen, Ryan Lake, Mike Bryant, and Bryan Cox. The album I'm posting here, Staring at the Divine, is from 2002 when Johnny Throckmorton still did the vocals. These songs are dirty. No, not the fucking lyrics... I mean the sound. Dirty. It's the first thing that comes to mind when I play this album or any of the others by atp but especially this one. Dirty is usually followed by the compulsion to grind my hips to celebrate all this dirtiness. This, I doubt seriously, will be the typical response for men, but are you going to complain when it causes such in  a female? if you do, then gtfo now.

this was said about this band and i can see why:

 ATP possess the kind of punk rock edge that most of their reefer-toting peers would die for. Monster Magnet may be slicker and Unida may be classier, but truckstop rock doesn't come any finer than this. An extended forefinger to the face of fashion--Kerang! 


This is some seriously sludgy southern metal. There's a 'classic rock' feel to a lot of it that I enjoy deeply. I was raised on that shit.  Some review on a random blog I read had this to say: 


Moreover, their ability to intertwine crunchy, thick slabs of groovy rhythm tracks with very solid leads makes Alabama Thunderpussy's music much more intriguing and compelling than many of their counterparts.

My dad passed away a number of years ago. this isn't a sad one though, don't worry. His birthday was last week. So, naturally, he was on my mind. As a kid he wasn't always around, but he made that effort, every now and then, and really came through. Just a simple man, confused by fatherhood, trying to make his kid smile.

Down formed in 1991 with a pretty badass group of musicians from other bands, Phil Anselmo from Pantera, Pepper Keenan from Corrosion of Conformity, Kirk Windstein and Todd Strange from Crowbar, and Jimmy Bower from Eyehategod. (At present, Strange is no longer with the band and Rex Brown took his place.) This album, their first, was released in 95 and debuted at 55 on the Billboard 200...that could have had a lot to do with the already known band members, but the sound is there. Phil Anselmo never sounded this good in Pantera. These songs are sludgy in a way that really gets my panties wet. I listen to this on roadtrips, rainy nights, during morning showers and practicing strip teases. It's good. period.

I like cover songs. I don't like cover bands.

Coalesce is a band you'll find frequently hitting my playlists. I like their sound a good bit. In fact, I'm listening to them as I type. The band has been together off and on since the mid 90s with their lastest release, Ox, coming from Relapse  Records in 2009. (Relapse knows their stuff. Check their site for lots of goodies). In 1999, an ep of led zeppelin covers was released entitled there is nothing new under the sun. I love led zeppelin. i grew up listening to them among many other 'classics', and i'm still of the frame of mind that i couldn't have the music i love so much today without them. at first listen, i thought to myself... i never thought it possible to really fuck up a zeppelin cover, but here's my proof... i kept an open mind though. it's grown on me tremendously. sean ingram's voice is almost as unique as robert plant's. what i have for you here is the 2007 reissue of the album which actually features a sabbath cover, a couple boysetsfire covers, and more. give it a try. perhaps my favorite on here is the one original song featured on this reissue entitled bob junior. and that sabbath cover ain't half bad.
